But Islam (and Christianity and orthodox Judaism and Hinduism - for you see every religion is basically the same) have failed to account for the women who do not desire to be in the home. Women, just like men, have passions and ambitions that do not always center on being free domestic baby-making labor. That's what set off this whole dispute - women wanting to be free to live the life they design for themselves. So while that's great that there are men who want to provide - there are many women who do not want to be put into a box.
Imagine the roles were reversed. Would you really want your life choices taken away the way they have been for women? No, you wouldn't. You find fulfillment in work and creating, and learning. This is a human trait, not a male trait.
