Especially with online dating, I was unwilling to move forward with a first date (when I was still dating) unless we were able to connect on a deeper level over the phone beforehand. Often that does involve talking about prior relationships - at least in general. It is pretty easy to see, when relationships come up, whether or not someone has a victim mentality about it.
