I agree. And yet, in practice, time and again, people know and do not tell. So there must be a real reason not to.

I'm guessing it's a shoot the messenger situation. Nobody wants to be the one to tell especially if the relationship isn't there - for example - I'm friends with the cheater, so telling the one who is being cheated on puts me in an awkward position bc I don't have a relationship with them.
