I had a similar awakening when I realized I was average 🙂 Such a useful realization! I don't kill myself trying to be the best any longer.

But yes, of all the people who lived throughout history we remember maybe a handful of names past a hundred years - Shakespeare, Cleopatra, Einstein, etc. There's really no reason to believe we'll be any different. Thank goodness.
