I hope your friend truly *needs* to work that many hours. Most people who do are choosing to put work ahead of family time. They may not even be admitting it to themselves, but it's very rare that someone can't find a different position that still pays the bills if they so choose.

I work in a job where it is encouraged to leave right at 5 every day and to use the generous PTO package. Yet, there are men night after night working late because they'd rather be at work (hanging out with other adults) than at home raising their children. It's very sad.
