I'm not postulating that we can always "know" that someone is problematic. I'm simply saying most men have heard other men make problematic statements that they would never make in front of women. And it's pretty easy to tell if it truly was meant as a joke or if that person has deeper held misogynistic beliefs. That's all I'm saying. Clearly it's impossible to know what actions someone will take, but it begins with thoughts, which lead to words, which lead to actions. If we have a man whose thoughts have already turned to words, we should at least be leery that he might decide to take action.
Threats of murder are taken seriously, but threats of rape are not. I'll let you come to your own conclusion as to why that is.
