I'm reading between the lines of this statement: "She wasn’t sure she wanted kids..."

HE was happy with the new arrangement. She clearly was not. He believes there was some kind of switch, I'm postulating that she never wanted to be a mother, and was therefore unhappy in her role. He just didn't notice because it was everything HE had always wanted.

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. The author never spoke to it.
