In fairness the friend group was formed in junior high, so he likely was already a friend before he really developed these problematic thoughts and behaviors. But yes, seeing their friends interact with their mom and sisters changed everything. An off-color rape joke just isn't as funny when you know your mom and one sister have dealt with it personally.
