Regardless of philosophy, someone who hits you should have no access to you, especially as an adult when you have full control over the actions you take after being hit.
But the philosophy that every event is neutral mimics nature. Does a mouse ascribe negative intent to the cat who chased him? Or does the mouse simply accept that it's in the cat's nature? Does it suck to be a mouse being chased by a cat? Yes. And the fear he feels is biological. As humans, we suffer psychological fear on top of biological fear because of the meaning we give events.
I don't claim to be an expert, but I do know that giving events in my life a neutral status helps to keep it in perspective and make the appropriate decisions.
Neutral fact: I married an abusive man.
Neutral fact: He abused me.
Neutral action taken: I left him and did not allow him access to me anymore.
We had a child together, so I was forced to interact with him for the next 17.5 years, but I did everything I could to keep our contact minimal and emotionless. I ended up remarried and my new husband dealt with my ex so I didn't have to. Example, my ex would send me long, accusatory emails attempting to get me riled up. My new husband would read them and let me know if there was any substance that needed to be addressed. Usually there wasn't. His threatening behavior was neutralized by my unwillingness to engage.
He is what he is. And all I can do is protect myself in the best ways I can.
No philosophy is perfect, but we can begin to see where we are creating or increasing our own suffering and that helps us take our power back.
