That's how I felt researching for one of my articles about rape. Many men in the comments were like - I don't know anyone who would rape a woman, yet confronted with the fact that more than 1 in 3 women have been raped or otherwise experienced violence at the hands of an intimate partner, it's very difficult to act like you have no idea who could possibly be perpetrating these crimes.
I've seen it quoted many times, something to the effect that every woman knows a woman who has been raped, but no men seem to know a rapist.
