There's not really a need to see yourself in the characters. Nor is there a need to apply any lessons to your own life. Simply watching a story unfold will give you insight into other points of view.

I went through a phase where I read a bunch of historical fiction about slavery. I didn't see myself in the characters, nor did I apply any lessons to my own life. But do I have a much deeper appreciation for the lived black experience in America? You bet your ass I do.

And yes, most voracious readers seem to be introverts. So yes, ignoring everyone around you still qualifies as hot imo.
