This is actually fairly common. I think men, a lot of times, choose their wife based on appearance and little else. So then when they're married and have nothing in common it gets ugly fast. I also think they remain in the marriage out of a sense of duty, or maybe fear of giving up the free domestic labor they benefit from.
I think there are still a lot of religious undercurrents in our society (for some) that make the thought of divorce seem worse than the miserable relationship - as though once you've signed the marriage license you're trapped forever regardless of circumstances.
If nothing else, I hope people realize just how much harm this does to them as individuals, their partners, but especially to children living in the toxic environment, that they are then doomed to repeat.
