This sounds like an internalized bias since there are now 10.76M single female homeowners in America, compared with 8.12M single male.
I would actually wager that women who are single and homeowners are more likely to frequent the home improvement stores, because if they are married, they may either go with their husband or their husband go alone.
Having been both a married and single homeowner, I can tell you that I am at the home improvement store far more often as a single homeowner than I ever was when I was married.
