We just aren't taught what healthy looks like. But in fairness I think every generation before us had no real clue, and therefore no way to teach us. You married some dude. You hoped for the best. You stayed married to said dude even if he was awful. It's only in the past few decades there has been choice about it. So we're just now figuring out what a healthy relationship with ourselves and others even means.
