You are 100% correct about the religious component, which I didn't mention at all, but that to me makes it even worse lol. Even things such as assuming paternity simply because a couple is married (therefore potentially making a man responsible for a child who isn't his), seem unreasonable.

I imagine, at a time when there were no paternity tests, it was probably a way to maintain order, but again, that thought process is outdated.
